Georgetown University senior guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) was one of 30 student-athletes across the country selected to the John R. Wooden Midseason Top 30, announced today by the Los Angeles Athletic Club and selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board.

The list is made up of 30 student-athletes who, based on their performances in November and December, are the early forerunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor.

Transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are eligible for this midseason list but did not appear on the preseason Top 50. All players nationally who excel throughout the season will be evaluated and considered for the official voting ballot released in March. The National Ballot consists of approximately 20 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round during the NCAA Tournament, making it unique among college postseason awards. Freeman was one of five players from the BIG EAST Conference.

Freeman has helped lead Georgetown to a 12-3 record and a No. 13 ranking nationally in the Associated Press poll and the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll. He leads the team in scoring, and ranks third in the BIG EAST Conference, with 18.3 points per game. He is also contributing 3.0 rebounds and 2.47 assists per game.

The senior tri-captain was named the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and has reached double figures in scoring 13 times this season, including seven games with at least 20 points. Freeman, who scored 31 points in a thrilling 111-102 overtime win at then-No. 9 Missouri, is seventh in the league in field goal percentage (55.4%), third in three-point field goal percentage (46.6%), ninth in free throw percentage (84.1%) and seventh in three-point field goals made (34, 2.27 per game).

Freeman ranks 16th all-time in scoring at Georgetown with 1,472 points, trailing former All-American Roy Hibbert by four points for 15th place. He is fourth all-time with 159 three-point field goals, tied for 15th with 538 field goals, 21st with a 51.7 field goal percentage and fourth all-time in free throw percentage at 81.2 percent.

Freeman is coming off a junior season in which he led the team in scoring, and ranked 11th in the BIG EAST, with 16.5 points per game. He was fourth on the team in rebounds (3.5), third in assists (2.4), second in three-point field goals made (59) and second in minutes played (34.4). Freeman connected on 52.5 percent of his field goals (11th in the league) and ranked fourth in the league, connecting on 85.6 percent of his free throws (83-of-97). In BIG EAST games, Freeman ranked fifth in the league, averaging 19.5 points per game. Freeman scored in double figures 28 times last season, had 18 games with at least 16 points and 11 with at least 20 points.

The 35th annual Wooden Award ceremony, which will include the announcement of the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winner, and the presentation of the Wooden Award All-American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, will take place the weekend of April 8-10, 2010.

About the John R. Wooden Award
Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation's best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird ('79), Michael Jordan ('84), Tim Duncan ('97), and Blake Griffin ('09). Candace Parker of Tennessee won the Women's Wooden Award in 2007 and 2008. Since its inception, the John R. Wooden Award has contributed close to a million dollars to universities' general scholarship fund in the names of the All-American recipients. The Award has also sent more than 1,000 underprivileged children to week-long college basketball camps in the Award's name. Additionally, the John R. Wooden Award partners with Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) each year to host the Wooden Award Special Olympics Southern California Basketball Tournament. The day-long tournament, which brings together Special Olympic athletes and the All-Americans, takes place at The Los Angeles Athletic Club on the Friday prior to the John R. Wooden Award Ceremony.
