WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad has been tabbed No. 10 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll which came out on Saturday. The Hoyas advanced to the Sweet 16 a season ago as the Blue & Gray continued to have a presence among the nation's best.
GU tied for seventh in league play last year and earned its second-consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament where the Hoyas advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second time in program history. Georgetown fell in the Round of 16 to Connecticut, 68-63, despite leading almost the entire game.
In her seventh season on the Hilltop, Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy led the squad to one of the most successful seasons in program history with an overall record of 24-11 and a mark of 9-7 in the BIG EAST.
The Hoyas defeated five ranked teams and were ranked in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Polls for the entire year, at one point reaching No. 11 on the AP Poll and No. 12 on the ESPN/USA Today Poll. The Blue & Gray finished the season with an RPI of 12, as well as being ranked 23rd and 14th on the AP and the ESPN/USA Today Polls, respectively.
Georgetown has had a place in the national polls since the 2009-10 season when the squad moved into the rankings earning No. 24 in the AP Poll after starting the year with a record of 12-2. It was the first time the Hoyas had been in the national polls since the 1992-93 campaign.
Prior to the 2009-10 season, Georgetown had been ranked for only one week taking the No. 25 position in the AP Poll on March 2, 1993.
This is the first time in program history that Georgetown has been in the AP's top ten.
The squad currently ranks No. 8 in the Sporting News Preseason Poll and No. 11 in the Athlon Sports Preseason Poll.
The BIG EAST had seven teams in the top 25, the most of any conference, with Notre Dame tabbed as the No. 2 squad with six first-place votes. Connecticut was selected No. 4, Louisville sat at No. 9, Rutgers earned No. 16, DePaul was No. 19 and St. John's took the No. 25 spot.
The Hoyas had four 2011-12 non-conference opponents in the polls in No. 7 Miami, No. 11 Maryland, No. 13 Georgia and No. 21 LSU.
Georgetown will open the season with Longwood on November 11. The Hoyas will travel to local rival, No. 11 Maryland, on November 13 at Comcast Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
