Hoyas Compete at George Mason 3+2

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team competed in the two-day George Mason 3+2 on Friday and Saturday as the squad completed fall play before ITA Regionals. George Mason University and George Washington University were in attendance along with the Blue & Gray.

The tournament directors changed the format from a 3+2 so all three squads played each other giving each player a number of matches. There was no team scoring at the event. On Friday, the Hoyas won six of eight singles matches and four of eight in doubles.

In singles play against George Mason, Alexandra Landers (Teaneck, N.J./Immaculate Heart) started things out with a 6-2, 3-1, ret., win over Brooke Blackwell. Sophomore Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) followed up with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Alison Wingo and sophomore Michaela Rollings (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) downed her opponent by a score of 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles play against the Patriots, the pair of Landers and Rollings won, 8-5.

In singles play with George Washington the Hoyas had a trio of three-set victories. Senior Lauren Greco (Oakmont, Pa./Shady Side Academy) battled Mimi Hamling in three sets winning 2-6, 6-4, 10-6. Junior Vicky Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) also played three sets with the 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 victory. Additionally, freshman Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) downed Leah Pascarella in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.

In doubles, the pair of Greco and Panarese had their hands full, but came out on top, 9-8 (5). Jaeger and Sekely won two matches against GW downing Jacqueline Corba and Meg Tyner, 8-6, as well as Julia Blakely and Isabella Escobar, 8-1. On Saturday, Georgetown managed eight singles victories, four against GW and four against GMU, as well as two in doubles play both coming against the Patriots.

Junior Nora Montgomery (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) defeated Ekaterina Desianikova from George Mason, 6-3, 6-2, while Landers added the 6-4, 6-4 victory over Wingo. Sekely managed the 6-0, 6-0 win in straight sets against Desianikova and Rollings had a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Amber Peters.

In doubles play, the pair of Jaeger and Sekely handily won, 8-0, while the duo of Greco and Panarese managed the 8-2 victory for the Hoyas.

Against George Washington, Sekely started things off with the 6-1, 6-2 win over Pascarella. Rollings added the 6-1, 6-1 win over Zoe Krohn, while Greco defeated Corba 6-0, 6-2 and Panarese rounded out the victories with the 6-4, 7-6 (3) battle over Hamling.

The Hoyas will have a week off before beginning ITA Regionals in Norfolk, Va.
