WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad will host a pair of games at McDonough Arena in the next four days. On Saturday, the Hoyas will play the University of Houston Cougars at 1 p.m., before matching up with the Monmouth University Hawks on Monday evening at 7 p.m.
The Blue & Gray is 1-2 on the season after battling a pair of ranked opponents on the road. GU fell at No. 20/21 LSU on Wednesday evening, 51-40, after playing a solid defensive game but struggling from the field. Georgetown dropped its previous contest to the University of Maryland Terrapins at Comcast Center on Sunday. The Hoyas kept it close in the first half, but shooting woes continued to fall, 72-53.
Senior Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) led the Hoyas in both contests with 17 points against Maryland and 12 at LSU. Junior guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) had a squad-high six rebounds against the Terps and senior guard Alexa Roche (Bellmore, N.Y./St Michael's Academy) posted nine boards against the Lady Tigers.
Georgetown forced 16 Maryland turnovers as well as 26 LSU giveaways while outrebounding the Lady Tigers, 49-42.
Magee leads the Hoyas with 10.3 ppg while Rodgers is second with 9.0 ppg and 4.7 rpg along with six steals and six assists. Roche is averaging 6.0 ppg and senior guard Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) as well as freshman Taylor Brown (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) round out the top five with 5.7 and 4.3 ppg, respectively.
Wright has a squad-best seven assists and senior forward Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) leads Georgetown on the boards with 5.0 rpg.
Houston is 0-2 on the season after falling to New Mexico State, 63-62, and No. 25/RV Texas Tech, 88-58. Saturday marks the Cougars' first road game of the season. Houston is led by senior guard Porsche Landry who is averaging 28.5 ppg and senior guard Roxana Button who has 12.5 ppg. Freshman forward Amanda Lawson is leading in rebounds with 5.5 rpg.
Georgetown is 1-0 all-time against the Cougars after defeating the squad, 77-37, in Houston, Texas last season. Magee led the squad with 15 points while Rodgers added 13 as 10 different players scored in the contest. GU forced 27 Cougar turnovers and outrebounded them 54-36. Brittany Scott led Houston with nine points in that contest.
Monmouth is 0-2 this season after falling to UMBC, 68-64, and Wake Forest, 88-54, more recently on Tuesday. Monmouth is led by junior guard Carly Thibault who is averaging 14.5 ppg, while junior forward Abby Martin has added 10.0 ppg. Senior guard Alexis Canady has pulled down 6.5 rpg as the Hawks have tied opponents in rebounding.
Georgetown is 0-1 all-time against the Hawks with the lone meeting coming during the 1987-88 season where the Hoyas fell, 66-64, at the Radisson Classic in the first game of the season.
Tipoff against Houston is scheduled for 1 p.m., at McDonough Arena on Saturday and the Hoyas will matchup against Monmouth at 7 p.m., on Monday evening.
