No. 20/20 Georgetown Hosts Rider on Sunday

WASHINGTON - The No. 20/20 Georgetown University women's basketball squad (6-2) will host the Rider University Broncs (3-2) on Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m., at McDonough Arena.

The Blue & Gray enters the contest against the Broncs on a five-game win streak. The Hoyas defeated Coppin State University on Wednesday evening, 70-54. Last weekend, Georgetown won the Lady Rebel Round-Up in Las Vegas, Nev., with victories over the No. 10/10 University of Georgia in the semi-finals and host UNLV in the championship game. Georgetown also posted strong performances at McDonough Arena against Monmouth on November 21, and Houston on November 19.

Junior guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) has had a big week scoring 26 points in the Coppin State win hitting eight threes and nabbing six steals. She was also named MVP of the Lady Rebel Round-Up, with 16 points, three assists and two steals in the 64-45 championship win against UNLV while also posting 23 points in the Georgia victory. For her efforts she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

Rodgers has led the Hoyas in points in four of eight games so far this season averaging a squad-best 14.0 ppg. She also shoots a team-high 90.5 percent from the free throw line. Senior forward Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) is averaging 12.1 ppg and 6.4 rpg. Senior point guard Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) is averaging 7.8 ppg to rank third and freshman Taylor Brown (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) is averaging 7.0 ppg to round out the top four.

Wright leads the Georgetown squad with 31 assists, while senior forward Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) is second in rebounding with 5.5 rpg.

Rider is 3-2 on the season after downing St. Francis (N.Y.), 68-48, on Wednesday evening. Senior guard Ali Heller led the way with 26 points and senior center Sarah Homan added seven boards. The Broncs are 1-1 on the road this season.

Sophomore guard MyNeshia McKenzie leads Rider averaging 13.2 ppg and and 8.6 rpg. Heller is averaging 12.8 ppg and junior forward Caitlin Bopp rounds out the top three with 10.0 ppg.

The Hoyas are 4-0 all-time against the Broncs and 3-0 at home. Georgetown beat Rider last season, 81-54, in Lawrenceville, N.J. on December 11, 2010. Crawford led the squad with 19 points, while Rodgers had 11 points and a squad-best seven rebounds. Alexa Roche (Bellmore, N.Y./St. Michael's Academy) also scored in double digits with 14 points. Georgetown outrebounded the Broncs, 40-26, and forced 25 Rider turnovers.

Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., at McDonough Arena. The game will be broadcast tape delayed on Verizon FiOS with Monika Moore on the call and Georgetown alum Monica McNutt doing color.
