WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team continued its win streak with a victory on Sunday afternoon. The Hoyas moved to six games in a row with a 58-51 win against the Rider University Broncs (3-3) at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas climbed back from a 12-point deficit with an 11-0 run to put them within one point of the Broncs with 10:42 left in the game.
With the victory, the Hoyas improve to 7-2 overall.
"We weren't playing defense the way we typically would play in the first half. The majority of our starters were sitting on the bench with two fouls and we were relying on our bench to play minutes that they weren't used to playing," said Georgetown Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "Once we got a group that played well together in the second half, that's when we were able to go on our run."
Junior guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) helped the Hoyas come back in the second half forcing a Rider foul and hitting a free throw at 17:06. This sparked the Hoyas into an 11-0 run. Rodgers tallied four points in the run and sophomore center Sydney Wilson (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College Prep) posted an additional three to get the Hoyas within one.
After taking the lead for good at 8:08, the Blue & Gray refused to let Rider get back in the game as it increased the advantage to 14 with a quick jumper by senior forward Tommacina McBride (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame), defensive rebound by Wilson and a pair of free throws by Rodgers. Rider battled back, but all efforts were thwarted as the Hoyas closed out the half forcing a turnover with 16 seconds left to play.
At the final buzzer, the Hoyas had the 58-51 victory.
At the end of the first half, the Hoyas trailed by five, 29-24, and couldn't quite find their footing as the Broncs jumped out to a 12-point lead with an 8-0 run. The Hoyas put an end to the run at 17:06 with a made free throw by Rodgers followed by a layup by Wilson.
Rider looked strong in the first with the score being tied five times and seven lead changes.
Rodgers led the way for the Hoyas with 21 points, while McBride added 10. Wilson led the team on the boards with 10 rebounds. The Hoyas forced 24 turnovers and out rebounded the Broncs, 41-40, in the contest.
Junior guard Sironda Chambers led the Broncs with 20 points going 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and 6-of-8 at the line.
The Hoyas will be on the road this Wednesday evening in their first BIG EAST Conference contest of the season. Georgetown will be at the University of Pittsburgh for a 7 p.m., matchup at the Petersen Sports Complex. The game will be broadcast locally in Pittsburgh on Comcast.
