WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior men's basketball player Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday for the third-straight week.
Wright led the Hoyas during a 1-1 week, including a 78-70 loss on the road to then-No. 13 Connecticut and to a 61-55 win at South Florida on Saturday night. The Hoyas have won nine of their last 10 games in BIG EAST play.
Georgetown is now 21-6 overall and improved to 10-15 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Hoyas are ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 11 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll.
Wright averaged 22.5 points, 4.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds during the two games last week. He connected on 51.7 percent of his field goals (15-of-29), hit 58.3 percent of his three-pointers (7-of-12) and all eight of his free throw attempts during the week. In a loss on the road to No. 13 Connecticut, he scored a team-high 19 points, tied a season-high with five three-pointers and handed out five assists. In a road win at South Florida, Wright scored a season-high 26 points, hit all eight of his free throw attempts, grabbed three boards and had four assists. Wright's 26 points moved him past Jeff Green for 18th all-time in scoring at Georgetown.
This is the fifth time this season Wright has been honored by the league as he was named Player of the Week once (Dec. 6) and has been named to the Honor Roll on three occasions (Nov. 22, Feb. 7, Feb. 14 and Feb. 21). Georgetown players have been recognized by the league nine times, with senior guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) being named Player of the Week on Jan. 24 and earning Honor Roll accolades four times (Nov. 29, Dec. 27, Jan. 17 and Jan. 31).
Wright is second on the team in scoring with 13.6 points per game and leads the team with 5.48 assists per game. Wright has handed out 148 assists, which is tied for the 16th-best single season mark in school history (alongside Jim Brown, 1964). He needs three more to pass David Edwards, who handed out 150 during the 1990 season. Wright's 5.48 per game average is the 14th-best per game single-season average.
The senior ranks sixth all-time with 437 assists and his 4.05 per game average stands ninth all-time.
Georgetown returns home to Verizon Center on Wednesday, Feb. 23, hosting BIG EAST rival Cincinnati (21-6, 8-6 BIG EAST) at Verizon Center. Tipoff is slated for 9 p.m. The game will be shown live on MASN, with Quint Kessenich and Bob Wenzel calling all of the action. The radio call of Rich Chvotkin can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
