WASHINGTON - Georgetown scored two runs in the first inning, but Norfolk State took an early lead after two innings and beat the Hoyas, 9-4, in a non-league baseball game at Marty L. Miller Field in Norfolk, Va. Wednesday afternoon.

The Hoyas fall to 2-2 this season, while Norfolk State improves to 2-2.

Freshman pitcher Alex Baker (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) took the loss for the Blue & Gray, throwing 2.0 innings in his collegiate debut, giving up seven earned runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Georgetown had taken a 2-0 lead after the top half of the first with a two-out rally. Sophomore shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) and senior third baseman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) reached base on back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. After Lamont stole second, a throwing error allowed Garza to score the game's first run. After a walk to senior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) put runners on the corners again, senior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College HS) reached on an error, allowing Lamont to come in and give GU a 2-0 lead.

Norfolk State scored two runs in the first inning to tie the game and had a five-run second inning, highlighted by a grand slam home from Brandon Hairston, to take a 7-2 lead.

The Hoyas cut the lead to 7-3 in the third when Garza doubled and scored on a ground ball out from Fernandez, but Norfolk State scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively to push the lead to 9-3.

The Hoyas finished the day with four runs on eight hits, but left 11 men on base.

Lamont went 3-for-5 with three singles and a run scored, while Garza went 2-for-4 with a double, single and two runs scored while junior right fielder Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints' Episcopal) went 2-for-4 with a triple, single and one run scored.

Sophomore reliever Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) had a solid relief effort for Baker, entering the game in the third inning and going 4.0 innings while allowing only one hit with no walks and three strikeouts.

Senior pitcher Jack Bender (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), making his first appearance after missing the 2010 season with an injury, allowed one run in the seventh inning while giving up one hit and walking one batter and freshman pitcher Stan Rowe (Tampa, Fla./Plant) gave up one run in the eighth inning while walking one, striking out one and giving up one hit.

Georgetown is back in action this weekend, playing in the Wake Forest Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Hoyas start play on Friday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m.
