Post Game Quotes

Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson III

On defending Marshon Brooks...
He's a special player, who had a special day, it's as simple as that. We put a lot of different people on him and I think the most effective may have been Chris (Wright) just because he's able to get up under him, but even then he scores in every way possible. He scores in the post, he can take you off the bounce both ways, he's got range and he's a good player who was having one of those days.

On forcing Brooks to his left...
It was part of the plan to try to keep him to the left. That's one thing where you go to the chalk board and say don't let Brooks go right, force him to his left, but it's much harder to do when you get out there. What we try to focus on is he's getting his. Not to say you're going to give him his, but he's getting his now let's see if we can take everyone else away. You don't want the person who averages 12 to get his average or the guy who averages six to all of a sudden get 14. If you can take everyone else away when one player is having a special day, there aren't too many people who can beat you by themselves. He was close, but there aren't too many that can do that.

On Providence clawing back in the second half...
They have been in every game. I can't remember there box scores for every game, but I don't think there have been too many games this year where they've been out of it. They just keep coming. They amped up there defense...
We had a key stretch there, where we were making decisions to take quick shots. That's not to say we don't want to take quick shots, but sometimes when a team is making a run you want to make them work at the defensive end. Especially since I thought we were getting the shots we wanted...Our decisions in that regard weren't that good and then we gave up some offensive rebounds.

On free-throw shooting in the second half...
(Missing 10 foul shots in the second half) adds to it. On top of everything else you make your foul shots and it's a different game.

On the play of Julian Vaughn...
It got to a point in the second half where they were making a conscious effort to take away the three-point line. So when you do that that's fine, it means our cuts are going to be open or you're going to be one-on-one in the post. Julian made a few good moves down there because he was one-on-one and Providence had no help because everyone was spread out and he was very effective. He also came down with a couple of big rebounds.

On the fans...
I'm glad our fans were here. I think the energy we feed off them is real and tangible. At key points in the game when that gym got loud it was coincidentally when we got a stop, got a rebound, made a good play, so I want to thank our fans because when we needed them to be good, they were good today.

Georgetown guard Chris Wright

On the final play...
"Jason was guarding him (Brooks) and he was coming hard down the left and I was just hoping that Jason would turn him. I think everybody in the gym knew that he was going to shoot the ball so I just left my man, kept my eyes on the ball and tried to make a play."

On Marshon Brooks...
"He had 43 and only missed 11 shots. He's very tough to guard because he uses his length to his advantage. I tried to make it tough for him, but at the end of the day he's 6-5, 6-6 with about a 7-0 wingspan so it's hard to contest every shot. He was hitting everything and he's a very good player. That was probably one of the best performances I've seen since my freshman year with (Stephen) Curry."

On bouncing back after missing some free throws down the stretch...
"I was just trying to think of the next play to help us get a win."

On Georgetown's defensive effort...
"Once a player gets in a zone, there's nothing you can really do. You just have to try to force them into tough spots. We were, but he (Brooks) was hitting tough shots. When that happens you just have to keep other guys from scoring."

Georgetown guard Jason Clark

On Georgetown's second half shooting...
"We were getting open shots in the second half, they just weren't falling. As coach said, we took some good shots with bad timing."

Georgetown forward Julian Vaughn

On his 14-point, 11-rebound performance...
"I just try to play hard every day and make the right plays. There are a lot of perimeter threats on this team so when other coaches decide to guard them close, then I am one-on-one in the paint and I just try and make plays for us to help us win."
