2011 NCAA Women's Basketball Bracket
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad continued its impressive season Monday evening earning its third NCAA bid in program history and the first in consecutive seasons. The Hoyas received the fifth seed in the Philadelphia region scheduled to face 12th-seeded Princeton University in the opening round on Sunday at the host University of Maryland.
"We're excited to be playing so close to home and that our fans will have an opportunity to come out and support us," said Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "Princeton is a good team out of the Ivy League and they score a lot of points so they'll be a challenge."
Georgetown is 22-10 overall after earning the eighth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to Connecticut; the Huskies went on to win the tourney. The Hoyas have been in the national rankings all season currently sitting at No. 23 in the AP Poll and No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Blue & Gray has had four wins over nationally-ranked opponents and two over top 10 opponents. The team has defeated six NCAA Tournament squads.
The Blue & Gray has been to the NCAA Tournament twice prior to this year. Last season, the Hoyas earned the fifth seed and played in Berkeley, Calif., defeating No. 12 Marist before falling to No. 4 Baylor Bears who eventually advanced to the Final Four.
During the 1992-93 season Georgetown earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid. Williams-Flournoy's first season as an assistant coach with the Hoyas. Georgetown fell in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament, but advanced to the Sweet 16 finishing the season with a record of 23-7.
The Tigers are 24-4 on the season and won the Ivy League to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, their second in as many years. Georgetown has faced Princeton twice in program history. The Hoyas are 1-1 all-time winning, 83-62, in 1996 but falling on the road, 71-44, during the 1997-98 season.
