WASHINGTON - Sophomore shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after helping to lead the Georgetown baseball to four wins last week, including a three-game sweep of Princeton during the weekend.
The Hoyas, who have won six-straight games, improved to 14-7 on Sunday when they completed a three-game sweep of Princeton. It was the first three-game series sweep for Georgetown since the team took three in a row from Yale during the 2005 season.
In four games last week, Garza batted .556 (10-for-18), with two doubles and seven RBI. He had 12 total bases, stole three bases and had a .636 on-base percentage.
During the weekend series against Princeton, Garza went 7-for-14 at the plate (.500). He hit three singles, walked once, scored two runs and drove in two in the 8-7 win on Friday night. In a 15-2 win on Saturday, Garza went 2-for-4 with two singles, two walks and four runs scored. He closed out the weekend by going 2-for-5 with a double, single and two RBI.
Garza is in the midst of a five-game hit streak, batting .591 (13-for-22) in that span with nine runs scored and eight RBI.
Overall this season, Garza is second on the team in batting with a .325 average (27-for-83). He is third on the team in runs scored (20), third in hits (27), tied for second in RBI (17), leads the team in doubles with seven and is fifth in total bases (34).
Georgetown plays next on Tuesday, March 22, hosting George Mason at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
