Howard Final Stats
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team won a pair of matches against local rivals on Wednesday at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. The Hoyas downed the University of the District of Columbia, 5-1, and then defeated Howard University by a score of 4-3. GU is now 5-7 on the season.
Against Howard, the Hoyas started strong picking up the doubles point by winning all three matches. Michael Clarke and Andrew Bruhn won, 8-4, at No. 1 while Bryan Miller and Charlie Caris clinched it at No. 2 with the 8-2 victory. The pair of Mieszko Tomczyk and Casey Distaso secured the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3.
In singles play, Howard came back to win the first three matches to take a lead. However, Distaso got the Hoyas back in the game with the 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 as well as Alex Friedlich who won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 to tie it up.
Tied at three, it came down to Tim Walsh who battled at No. 6 for the huge 6-3, 6-3 victory to clinch the 4-3 win for the Hoyas.
Against UDC, the teams agreed to play just the singles portion as the Hoyas won 5-1. Clarke had the closest match at No. 1 with the 6-7, 7-5, 10-8 win. Caris was victorious at No. 2 by a score of 7-6, 6-1.
Despite dropping the No. 3 match, Georgetown came back as Miller, Distaso and Friedlich won at No. 4, 5 and 6 making the final 5-1.
The Hoyas will be on the road this weekend playing St. John's on Friday and at Connecticut on Saturday in a pair of conference matchups.
