WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Cal State Northridge Matadors on Sunday in Northridge, Calif., at the Matador Tennis Complex. It was the first of two matches in California over spring break. GU is now 3-5 on the year.
The Blue & Gray picked up the doubles point as Stephanie Wetmore and partner Tina Tehrani won, 8-6, at No. 1 and Lauren Greco and Madeline Jaeger edged the Matadors, 8-6.
Wetmore and Tehrani won at both singles and doubles to move to a combined 6-0 in their last three matches. On Sunday, the pair defeated nationally-ranked Jennifer Sher and Brooke Doane who were previously undefeated.
In singles play, the entire match came down to No. 6 Alexandra Landers who battled, but fell, in three sets. Landers dropped the first set, 7-6(4), but came back to get the second, 6-4. She fought through the third, but lost 6-4 in the three-hour marathon.
Wetmore won at No. 1, 6-4, 7-6(4), and Tehrani added the 0-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 4.
It was the first outdoor match of the season for the Hoyas who battled through the wind and the elements.
"It was a great match, I'm so proud of the team," said Georgetown Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "That was a good team that had previously beaten San Diego State who is nationally ranked."
Georgetown will continue the California road swing at Loyola Marymount on Wednesday.
