WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team will open BIG EAST Tournament play on Thursday in South Bend, Ind. The eighth-seeded Hoyas will battle the No. 9 University of Cincinnati Bearcats at 9 a.m., at the Courtney Tennis Center.
Georgetown had an outstanding spring campaign finishing the season with a record of 11-8 overall and a mark of 7-2 in BIG EAST play with conference victories over Villanova, 6-0; Pittsburgh, 4-2; Seton Hall, 6-1; Rutgers, 4-3; Connecticut, 7-0; Providence, 6-0; Cincinnati, 5-2. It marked one of the best seasons in the past 10 years. The Hoyas have won their last eight matches.
Leading the way for the Blue & Gray is graduate student Stephanie Wetmore, junior Lauren Greco and freshman Tina Tehrani. Wetmore is 22-9 on the season with a mark of 14-5 at No. 1 singles. Greco is 17-11 overall with a record of 11-5 in at the No. 2 position. Greco and Wetmore have both won seven of their last eight matches.
Rounding out the top performers is Tehrani who is 15-3 going an impressive 12-1 at No. 4 singles. She is currently on a 10-match win streak.
In doubles play, Greco and Wetmore were hot at the beginning of the season and moved into the national rankings going 8-2 overall with a record of 4-1 in dual matches. Wetmore has most recently paired up with Tehrani and the duo is 8-1 at the No. 1 position.
The winner of Thursday's match will advance to face top-seeded Notre Dame on Friday. The Irish are currently ranked 24th in the nation and have won five of the past six BIG EAST titles.
