Women's Tennis Defeats Cincinnati in BIG EAST Tournament Play

April 28, 2011

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team continued its impressive season with its first BIG EAST Tournament victory in more than ten years on Thursday in the opening round of the conference tournament hosted by the University of Notre Dame. The eighth-seeded Hoyas (12-8) dismantled the ninth-seeded University of Cincinnati Bearcats, 4-1.

After defeating the Bearcats earlier this season, 5-2, the Blue & Gray quickly downed the squad once again to move on to the second round.

Junior Lauren Greco started strong with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles. The Bearcats came back to tie it up, but the Hoyas took over from that point on.

Graduate student Stephanie Wetmore made quick work of her opponent at No. 1 with the 6-1, 6-3 victory. She was followed by No. 3 Vicky Sekely as the sophomore managed the 6-1, 6-2 win. Clinching the match was freshman Madeline Jaeger at No. 5 who pulled out the 6-3, 6-4 decision to advance the Hoyas.

The remaining matches were called and the teams didn't play doubles per the tournament rule that will suspend matches when it will not change final outcome.

Georgetown's victory marked the Hoyas' first conference tourney win since 2000 when the sixth-seeded Hoyas downed Villanova, 5-2.

The Blue & Gray will be tested on Friday as the Hoyas take on top-seeded Notre Dame. The Irish are currently ranked 24th in the nation and have won five of the past six BIG EAST titles.

The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., on the south courts at the Leeper Park Tennis Center.
