WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team will open BIG EAST Tournament play on Friday in South Bend, Ind. The seventh-seeded Hoyas will battle the No. 2 University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 9 a.m., at the Courtney Tennis Center.
Georgetown finished the season with a record of 7-12 overall and a mark of 2-1 in BIG EAST play with conference victories over Villanova University by a score of 4-3 and the University of Connecticut which Georgetown defeated, 4-3.
Leading the way for the Blue & Gray is junior Michael Clarke and sophomore Charlie Caris who both have 11 wins on the season. Clarke is 6-8 at No. 1 and Caris is 5-5 at No. 2 as well as 3-2 at No. 3. Freshman Alex Friedlich has a winning overall record of 8-7 going 3-0 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
In doubles play, one of the most consistent teams of the season has been junior Andrew Bruhn and Clarke who are 11-11 overall with a mark of 7-8 at No. 1.
The Irish are currently ranked No. 28 in the nation and were runners-up at last year's championship.
The winner of Friday's match will advance to Saturday and play the winner of third-seeded University of South Florida and sixth-seeded Marquette at the Courtney Tennis Center at 9 a.m.
