WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team made a statement on Saturday with a huge 4-3 victory over the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. The Hoyas snapped an eight-game Scarlet Knight win streak and made a case for a BIG EAST Tournament berth. Georgetown battled for every point to get the victory and improve to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST play.
"I was so proud of the team today," said Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "Tina (Tehrani) clinched the match, and the big story is (Lauren) Greco who came back from being down 5-2 to get us the win."
Georgetown won the doubles point as the No. 1 pair of Stephanie Wetmore and Tina Tehrani won, 8-3, and the No. 2 duo of Vicky Sekely and Lauren Greco managed the 8-2 victory.
The Hoyas quickly took a 3-0 lead as No. 1 Wetmore won 6-3, 6-1 and No. 2 Greco came back from a big deficit to get the 7-5, 6-2 win. The Scarlet Knights weren't done yet, however, as GU fell at No. 6 and No. 3.
Clinging to the 3-2 lead, the freshman Tehrani defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 to get the victory and clinch the match for the Hoyas.
Wetmore, Greco and Tehrani all had good afternoons winning in both singles and doubles play.
It marked the first win over Rutgers for the Hoyas since the 2000 season when Georgetown won, 5-4.
Georgetown will be back in action on Sunday as the Hoyas host Seton Hall in a BIG EAST match at 11 a.m., at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex.
