WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis squad placed sixth at the BIG EAST Championship this past weekend. On Saturday, the eighth-seeded Hoyas downed the fourth-seeded University of Louisville Cardinals, 4-2, to move to the fifth-place match on Sunday where GU fell, 4-2, to seventh-seeded Syracuse University. The Hoyas finish the season with a record of 13-10 marking one of the best seasons in program history.
In Saturday's match, GU lost the doubles point but came back strong in singles play. Sophomore Vicky Sekely started things off at No. 3 winning 6-1, 6-0. The Cardinals took the No. 6 match, but freshman Madeline Jaeger managed to pick up the 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Graduate student Stephanie Wetmore added to the success with the 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1. Finally, freshman Tina Tehrani clinched the huge win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 as the Hoyas managed the 4-2 decision.
On Sunday, the Hoyas faced off against the Orange for their second matchup of the season. Georgetown lost the first one, 5-2. The lone doubles victory came from Tehrani and Wetmore at No. 1 who won 8-3, but it was not enough for the doubles point.
In singles play, No. 1 Wetmore and No. 2 junior Lauren Greco both picked up victories. Wetmore had the 6-1, 6-3 decision and Greco pulled out the 6-1, 7-5 victory. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the Hoyas eventually fell, 4-2, to take sixth place in the tournament.
The Blue & Gray will lose just two players next season including Wetmore and senior Alex Sebia as the squad looks to build upon this year's success.
