WASHINGTON - Recent Georgetown University graduate and women's basketball standout Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) was recently named Distiguished All-Met by The Washington Post. She received the award at the All-Met luncheon on Friday, June 10 held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
McNutt was honored as a former All-Met award winner that went on to make a difference in her career at Georgetown both on and off of the court. She is one of at least three members of the Georgetown community to earn the distinction joining John Thompson Jr. and current Head Coach John Thompson III who won the award last year.
The local product gave a brief acceptance speech in front of more than 800 2010-11 All-Met honorees, coaches, parents and media members. She reminded the high school athletes to enjoy their careers and to realize that it will end quickly so they should cherish every moment.
McNutt, a two-time captain for the Blue & Gray, was part of the programs biggest turnaround in program history. The squad went from a postseason drought to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in her time on the Hilltop. As a sophomore, the squad advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT before the Hoyas made history returning to the NCAA Tournament after a 16-year hiatus in 2009-10. This past year, Georgetown continued to thrive sitting in the national rankings all season and advancing to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
At the team banquet, McNutt won the Stephen Paluszek Family Hoya Award given to the player that is an MVP both on and off the court. McNutt started every game in her final three seasons and was both a Second Team and Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST award winner. As a senior, she was Georgetown's second-leading scorer with 10.5 ppg including 72 3-pointers on the season. McNutt ranks 15th on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,166 points after hitting her 1,000 point earlier this season. She is also second all-time in 3-pointers with 209 to her credit.
In her career, McNutt appeared in 131 games in a Georgetown uniform giving her the program record for games played. She started 101-consecutive games as well as 111 in her final 112 contests on the Hilltop.
McNutt also made an impact off the court serving as Georgetown's unofficial spokeswoman representing the team to the media and in the community. She has served as a mentor to younger players at Georgetown and beyond.
Former Washington Redskin LaVar Arrington was the keynote speaker of the event as all of the All-Met winners from the current academic year received their awards.
One familiar face in the crowd was Georgetown recruit Taylor Brown who was the All-Met Girl's Basketball Player of the Year. Brown was also the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the Gatorade Player of the Year in Maryland. She led Bishop McNamara with 20.4 ppg, 4.8 spg, 3.9 apg and 2.9 rpg as a senior.
McNutt is currently pursuing a career in broadcasting after interning at the local NBC affiliate during her senior year.
