WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Women's Tennis Head Coach Gordie Ernst has announced that Stephanie Wetmore was named the program's new assistant coach. Wetmore played her final season of eligibility at Georgetown making a huge impact on the program in just one season. She played at the University of California-Los Angeles as an undergraduate student-athlete. She will assist Ernst with coaching and program operations.
"I am so thrilled to have Stephanie join our staff," said Ernst. "She has a true passion for the game and, aside from being an outstanding player, Stephanie will use her vast experience and leadership skills to help the younger players on the team."
Wetmore was named Georgetown's MVP this past year after an outstanding season. She was the first player under Ernst to be named to the All-BIG EAST squad.
The Mississauga, Ontario native went 25-9 on the year with a mark of 17-5 at No. 1 singles and a mark of 7-2 in BIG EAST matches. She finished the year with a five-match win streak and managed a victory in 10 of her final 11 matches including a 3-0 performance in the BIG EAST Tournament.
In doubles play, she was 21-4 overall including a record of 9-1 with partner Tina Tehrani and a mark of 8-2 with Lauren Greco. Greco and Wetmore were among the national ITA rankings this past season.
At UCLA, Wetmore was part of an incredibly talented program that played in three NCAA Championships. As a junior, Wetmore was ranked in the top 25 in the nation in doubles and her team made it to the NCAA Round of 16.
Her sophomore season, the Bruins were the NCAA and Pac-10 Champions and as a freshman the squad advanced to the NCAA team finals. She finished her career at UCLA with a record of 42-31 in singles and 78-32 in doubles play.
In juniors play, Wetmore was among the top 100 in the world on the Junior ITF Circuit. The Ontario, Canada native represented her country at the Orange Bowl and the Junior US Open. She ranked as high as No. 2 in Canada (U-16's) and her squad captured the 2005 championship at the Canadian Summer Games.
Wetmore is in her second year in the sports industry management program in the School of Continuing Studies at Georgetown. She is also continuing her playing career in regional and national tournaments.
