WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Women's Basketball Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy will also be in China over the next few weeks, but on a different trip than the men's program. Williams-Flournoy is one of the assistant coaches for the USB Basketball World University Games squad.
Williams-Flournoy, the team and staff began training camp on Monday, August 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and narrowed the squad down to 12 players on Wednesday. The group will continue practicing into next week before leaving for Shenzhen for its final World University Games preparation.
The U.S. opens play on Aug. 14 against Brazil, will face Slovakia on Aug. 15 and caps preliminary round action against Great Britain on Aug. 16. Quarterfinals are slated for Aug. 18, medal semifinals will be played Aug. 19 and the finals will be held Aug. 21.
The World University Games are a multi-sport competition organized every other year by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The USA women's basketball team will be comprised of U.S. citizens who are currently enrolled in college and have remaining eligibility.
USA Basketball women's teams have participated in 15 prior World University Games and collected a record seven gold medals, six silvers and one bronze medal. Since 1973, the first year the USA women competed in the WUGs, the United States has compiled an 89-15 overall
After three 20-win seasons and the program's second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, Williams-Flournoy has built Georgetown into one of the premier programs in the area. This past year, the Blue & Gray had five wins over nationally-ranked opponents and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second time in program history before narrowly falling to top-seeded Connecticut.
