2011-12 Schedule
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad announced its 2011-12 BIG EAST schedule on Wednesday. The Hoyas will have eight conference games at McDonough Arena and eight on the road to play all 15 opponents including two matchups with Syracuse University. GU will also make six appearances on television in BIG EAST contests.
The Hoyas will open conference play on December 7 at the University of Pittsburgh. This marks the second-consecutive season that the Blue & Gray will play a BIG EAST game in December. Georgetown defeated Pitt last season at McDonough Arena, 67-57. The Panthers went 14-17 last year.
Following four nonconference games, the Blue & Gray will tipoff in the New Year on January 3 against DePaul University at McDonough Arena. DePaul was one of nine BIG EAST squads that went to the Women's NCAA Tournament. Georgetown fell tothe Blue Demons last year in overtime in Chicago.
A trip to the University of South Florida is scheduled for January 7 as the Hoyas look to return the favor of a 60-55 loss to the Bulls in Florida at the end of last season.
GU will then host national runner-up Notre Dame on January 10 followed by the first of two matchups with Syracuse on January 15. The matchup with the Fighting Irish will be televised on CBS College Sports. The last time the squads met at McDonough Arena, Georgetown came away with the 76-66 victory. Syracuse went to the Women's National Invitation Tournament last season as the lone squad from the BIG EAST.
A trip to Marquette University is scheduled for January 17 in Milwaukee, Wis. The Golden Eagles went 24-9 last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament along with the University of Louisville who GU will host on January 22. The Marquette game will be televised on ESPNU and the Louisville contest will be aired on CBS College Sports.
Georgetown will be at West Virginia on January 24 with the Mountaineers coming off of a 23-9 season as well as an NCAA Tournament berth. The Hoyas look to avenge a tough loss in New Jersey last season as the Blue & Gray hosts Rutgers University on January 29 at McDonough Arena on ESPNU. Rutgers was 20-13 last year and went to the NCAA Tournament.
The Hoyas will finish out the year with trips to the University of Cincinnati (February 4), the University of Connecticut (February 11), Villanova University (February 14) and Syracuse (February 25). Georgetown met Connecticut three times last season including an exciting battle during the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. The matchup in Connecticut will be televised on the BIG EAST Network and locally on MASN.
Seton Hall (February 8), Providence (February 18) and St. John's round out the year for the Hoyas. The St. John's game on February 27 will be Senior Day for the class of seven seniors. The Red Storm went to the NCAA Tournament last season after finishing 22-11 and defeating the Blue & Gray in regular-season play.
The BIG EAST Tournament is scheduled for March 2-6 in Hartford, Conn., at the XL Center. All 16 conference teams will make an appearance in the tournament.
