Final Stats
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team started the 2011-12 school year strong with a solid showing on the first two days of the University of North Carolina Wilmington Fall Classic. The Hoyas had one pair in the semifinals and two singles players advance to the finals with play completing on Sunday.
Leading the way in singles play was sophomore Tina Tehrani (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) who won two matches on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the A Flight. On Friday she defeated Margaret Boyette from Furman University 6-2, 6-4 before downing Alyssa Ritchie from the host Seahawks 6-0, 6-0. On Saturday, the draw was changed so two UNCW players did not face one another and Tehrani defeated Kelly Cameron 6-4, 6-3. She will play in the championship match on Sunday.
Also winning in the A Flight was freshman Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) who took down Melis Tanik from West Virginia by a score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Tanik typically plays No. 1 singles for the Mountaineers.
In the B Flight, junior Vicky Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) battled three players from Furman. She won two matches on Friday defeating Jenny Porter by a score of 6-1, 6-1 and Porter's teammate Michelle Stanford 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to move to the semifinals. Sekely beat Susan Bitetti, also from FU, on Saturday 6-1, 6-1 and will play in the finals on Sunday against Furman's Alex Morano.
In doubles play, the duo of Sekely and Tehrani beat a pair from UNCW, 8-6, on Friday before downing two players from West Virginia on Saturday by a score of 8-6 to move to the semifinals.
The finals will be played Sunday morning as the Hoyas round out a successful opening weekend.
