WASHINGTON - Freshman midfielder Daphne Corboz (Greenbrook, N.J./Watchung Hills) scored a goal in the second half for No. 22 Georgetown, but it wasn't enough as the Hoyas lost, 3-1, to William & Mary during first round play of the Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. It was the second-straight loss for the Blue & Gray, who fall to 3-2 this season, while William & Mary improves to 4-0.
The Tribe scored a goal in the first half to take a 1-0 lead at the break and then added two more goals in the final 20 minutes to open a 3-0 lead en route to the win.
William & Mary jumped on top in the third minute Aly Shaughnessy delivered a pass to Cortlyn Bristol, whose shot from eight yards out beat senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Hanna (Waxhaw, N.C./Weddington), giving the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
The Hoyas had chances in the first half with five shots and continued to press in the second half, but William & Mary pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute. Hanna made a save on a shot from Diana Weigel, but Emory Camper came through with a shot from 10 yards out for the goal.
William & Mary pushed the lead to 3-0 seven minutes later when Bristol sent a cross from 18 yards out that Camper headed in for the goal.
Georgetown cut the lead to 3-1 when Corboz collected a corner kick from senior Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif.//Wilson) , dribbled to the center of the box and sent a knuckling shot to the far post at 84 minutes.
The Hoyas out-shot William & Mary, 14-11, with shots on goal even at 5-all. Both teams took two corner kicks.
Georgetown continues play in the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 4, playing Virginia Commonwealth. Kickoff is slated for noon.
