WASHINGTON - Heavy rains on Friday could not stop the Georgetown University women's tennis team as the squad hosted its annual Georgetown Classic this past weekend. Sophomore Tina Tehrani (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) continued her outstanding start to the fall season winning the singles and doubles title with partner freshman Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy).
After all play was suspended on Friday due to weather conditions, the teams got on the courts on Saturday with a revised draw. As the top seed in the tournament, Tehrani earned a first-round bye and then defeated a player from Lehigh University, 10-0, before downing her own doubles partner Panarese, 10-2, in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Tehrani battled past Shalini Sahoo from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, 6-1, 6-3, before facing off with Sahoo's teammate Kim Berghaus in the final. Tehrani picked up the first set by a score of 6-4 before Berghaus retired in the second giving the sophomore the tournament victory.
It marked the second-consecutive year that a Hoya has won the Georgetown Classic with graduate student turned current assistant coach Stephanie Wetmore winning a year ago.
Tehrani has now won two tournaments in a row after taking the A flight title at the UNCW Fall Classic last weekend in Wilmington, N.C.
The entire Hoya squad looked sharp in singles play as junior Vicky Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) advanced to the semifinals with wins over two Lehigh players 10-4 in the second round and 10-2 in the quarterfinals before falling to Berghaus.
Two Hoyas also made it to the quarterfinals putting a Georgetown player in each of the four matches. Senior Lauren Greco (Oakmont, Pa./Shady Side Academy) defeated UMBC's Kyri Hadji, 10-1, before downing Hadji's teammate Carmen Jackmen, 10-6, to advance to the quarterfinals before falling to Berghaus.
Sophomore Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) won, 10-5, in the first round before downing her own teammate Michaela Rollings (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy), 10-3, to move on to the quarterfinals where she fell to Sahoo.
In doubles play, Tehrani and Panarese were the top pair winning, 8-2, in the opening round over a twosome from UMBC before advancing to the championship with a 9-7 victory over another Retriever duo. Additionally, the team of Sekely and Jaeger won a first-round matchup by a score of 8-2.
On the opposite side of the bracket, Greco and partner Alexandra Landers (Teaneck, N.J./Immaculate Heart) picked up an 8-3 victory to move to the semifinals.
Georgetown will be back in action in two weeks on October 7 at the George Mason 3+2.
