WASHINGTON - Despite bad weather, the Georgetown University men's tennis team opened the fall season this past weekend hosting the Georgetown Classic at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. Senior Andrew Bruhn (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) made it to the championship match of the singles competition and in doubles play, the Hoyas had one team advance to the semifinals.

Bruhn put together a solid weekend defeating Lehigh University's Matt Savran, 10-5, in the first round and the University of Maryland's Jan Surovic by a score of 10-1. In the quarterfinals, Bruhn defeated the University of the District of Columbia's Aleksander Grabovac, 10-6, which matched him up against Georgetown teammate Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) who he defeated 6-3, 3-6, 10-4.

In the championship match, Bruhn fell to Maryland's David Nguyen by a score of 7-5, 7-5.

Korber was the other Hoya to make it to the semifinals. He defeated UDC's Miguel Uzcategui, 10-3, before downing Georgetown teammate Raf Notario (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School) by a score of 10-1. Korber beat Maryland's Tommy Laine, 10-7, to meet Bruhn in the semifinals.

Notario had advanced on a 10-2 victory over Lehigh's Edgars Rauza, while Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) was the other winner for GU defeating Lehigh's Bejamin Gilman, 10-6.

In doubles play, sophomore Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North) and partner senior Brian Ward (Darwin, Minn./Litchfield) used a first-round bye to meet a duo from UMBC in the second round. The Hoyas won, 8-5, and faced two more Retrievers in the quarterfinals getting the 8-1 victory. In the semifinals, Ward and Distaso fell to the eventual champs, Maryland's Mathias Sarrazin and Laine, by a score of 8-5.

Georgetown had a pair in all four quarterfinal matches with the duo of Distaso and Bruhn advancing.

The men's squad will be in action next weekend in Providence, R.I., at the Margaux Powers Memorial Tournament.
