Final Stats
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team went 2-1 at the Virginia Commonwealth University 4+1 this past weekend in Richmond, Va. The Hoyas defeated Norfolk State University, 4-0, on Saturday before falling to the host Rams, 4-1. On Sunday, the squad downed Longwood University, 3-2. It marked the first competition of the spring for the Blue & Gray.
In the Norfolk State victory, GU had winss in the first three positions. At No. 1, senior Andrew Bruhn (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) defeated Ben Marks, 6-1, 7-5. Junior Charlie Caris (Des Moines, Iowa/Theodore Roosevelt) followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 and freshman Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) added the 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3.
In the No. 4 match, sophomore Andrew Dottino (New York, N.Y./The Pendleton School) was ahead before it was called.
In doubles play, the pair of senior Brian Ward (Darwin, Minn./Litchfield) and sophomore Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North) won 6-3, 6-2.
Against VCU, the lone win came from Korber at No. 1 who defeated Max Wennakoski in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. Wennakoski is currently ranked No. 47 in the nation by the ITA.
In the Longwood victory, Caris managed the 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3, while Dottino picked up the 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 to tie it up at two. The pair of Ward and Distaso then clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win in doubles play.
The victory marked the first time GU has defeated Longwood in five years.
The Blue & Gray will host Richmond on Saturday indoors in Alexandria, Va. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
