WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team downed the University of Richmond Spiders, 4-1, on Saturday at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, Va. The Hoyas are now 3-1 on the season.
The pair of junior Charlie Caris (Des Moines, Iowa/Theodore Roosevelt) and senior Andrew Bruhn (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) picked up the first point winning, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North) and senior Brian Ward (Darwin, Minn./Litchfield) followed that up with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 to get the doubles point.
Ward made it 2-0 at No. 5 singles defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-4 in what the coaching staff called a clinical performance for the match. The Spiders pulled within one, but sophomore Andrew Dottino (New York, N.Y./The Pendleton School) gave the Blue & Gray some breathing room with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4.
Focusing on the No. 1 singles matchup, Bruhn battled for the 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(4) win to clinch the match. The senior had won the first set, but dropped the second. In the evenly-matched third, it came down to a final-set tiebreaker. Bruhn led, 5-4, before managing an ace then forcing a return error on first serve to win the game and clinch the match.
Georgetown will be back in action at Mary Washington University on February 12.
