Rodgers Earns USBWA Player of the Week Honors

Jan. 3, 2012

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University junior women's basketball player Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) continued to collect honors this week being named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week on Tuesday.

On Monday, she earned BIG EAST Player of the Week after the No. 15/16 Hoyas went 2-0 over the past seven days with a pair of victories at the 35th Annual Blue Sky Classic in Hanover, N.H.

As the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week, Rodgers was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week.

Rodgers averaged 36.5 ppg over two games for the Hoyas. She had 34 points in the 65-53 win over Vermont before dropping in a career-best 39 at Dartmouth where the Blue & Gray came away with the 77-38 victory.

She added 12 rebounds, five steals and shot 52 percent from behind the arc for the week.

Rodgers was named the Blue Sky Classic MVP after breaking tournament records for points in a game (39), points in the tournament (73) and 3-pointers in the tournament (11).

Despite her first honor from the USBWA, Rodgers is no stranger to weekly awards winning her fifth-career ECAC Player of the Week Honor last week. She has been the BIG EAST Player of the Week on four occasions, is a five-time BIG EAST Rookie of the Week and has been on the weekly honor roll ten times.

Monday was her third BIG EAST weekly award of the season after spending two-consecutive weeks on the BIG EAST Honor Roll. She is the only player to have won multiple player of the week honors from the BIG EAST so far this season.

Georgetown will be back in action tonight at McDonough Arena as the squad takes on the No. 20/18 DePaul University Blue Demons to begin 2012 BIG EAST play. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The game will be broadcast tape delayed on Verizon FiOS with Monika Moore on the call and Georgetown alum Monica McNutt doing color.

Fans can watch live on www.GUHoyas.com with Ryan Sakamoto and Ben Gordon Goldstein calling the action. Live stats will also be available.
