Jan. 6, 2012

WASHINGTON - The No. 15/16 Georgetown University women's basketball squad (12-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) will travel to Tampa, Fla., on Saturday for a 7 p.m., matchup with the University of South Florida Bulls (9-6, 1-0 BIG EAST) at the USF Recreation Center.

The Blue & Gray snapped an 11-game win streak on Tuesday falling to the DePaul University Blue Demons, 59-50, at McDonough Arena. Junior guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) had 28 points in the loss, but got little help as the Blue & Gray dropped its first conference game of the season.

On Monday, Rodgers' honor was her third weekly award of the season after spending two-consecutive weeks on the BIG EAST Honor Roll. She is the only player so far this season to earn more than one player of the week honor.

Rodgers made history at the Blue Sky Classic as Georgetown cruised to the victory over Dartmouth in the final game of the Blue Sky Classic. Rodgers was named the tournament's MVP breaking the records for points in a game (39), points in the tournament (73) and three's made in the tournament (11). Her 39 points also broke her personal best which she had tied the previous evening. Rodgers led the Hoyas with 6.0 rpg for the weekend, shot 52.4 percent from three and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Senior forward Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) was named to the Blue Sky Classic All-Tournament squad after averaging 9.0 ppg over two contests and 6.0 rpg.

Rodgers has led the Hoyas in points in 11 of 15 games so far this season with a high of 39 points in the win over Dartmouth. She is averaging 20.7 ppg to lead the BIG EAST, 5.2 rpg to rank third on the team and has a squad-high 38 steals. She also shoots a team-high 87.1 percent from the free throw line.

Magee is second on the squad with 11.4 ppg and a squad-best 6.8 rpg. Senior point guard Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) is averaging 6.5 ppg, while freshman Taylor Brown (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) is averaging 6.1 ppg to round out the top four. Wright also leads the Georgetown squad with 70 assists.

The Bulls are 9-6 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. In its last game, USF downed Cincinnati, 58-55, in its BIG EAST opener. Senior guard Jasmine Wynne led the way with 16 points, while junior guard Kaneisha Saunders added 13. Junior forward Tiffany Connor and junior guard Andrell Smith each had a team-high six boards.

Wynne is leading the squad with 15.9 ppg as well as 6.1 rpg on the season.

Georgetown is 5-4 all-time against USF and 2-3 on the road. Last season, the Hoyas downed the Bulls, 67-38, at McDonough Arena, but fell in the final game of the regular season at the Sun Dome, 60-55. Rodgers led the way in the victory with 25 points and Wright led the Hoyas with 12 in the loss in Tampa.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., at the USF Recreational Center. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
