BERKELEY, Calif. - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad will head West over the Thanksgiving holiday to play two games at the Cal Classic by Doubletree in Berkeley, Calif., hosted by the University of California Berkeley.
The Hoyas will play a pair of games opening with the Cal State Fullerton Titans in the semifinals of the tournament on Friday at 6:15 p.m. ET at Haas Pavilion. The winner of that game will take on the winner of No. 11/11 Cal and Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., or 6:15 p.m. ET.
The Blue & Gray is 3-1 on the season after picking up a home victory this past week. The Hoyas defeated the Louisiana State University Lady Tigers, 71-69, on Monday at McDonough Arena.
Senior shooting guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds, as well as five assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) added a career-best 16 and senior center Sydney Wilson (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College Prep) managed a career-high 15 points. Horne also pulled down seven rebounds.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Lady Tigers, 40-36, and forced 18 turnovers.
Currently leading the way for the Hoyas is Rodgers, who also sits among the BIG EAST's leaders. The shooting guard is averaging 24.0 ppg and 7.3 rpg as well as posting 19 steals and 14 assists. She is also shooting 76.5 percent at the line. Junior forward Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) is second with 11.0 ppg and 5.8 rpg, while sophomore guard Jasmine Jackson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) rounds out the top three with 7.3 ppg. Junior guard Samisha Powell (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) is leading the team with 14 assists to her credit and is averaging 6.3 ppg.
The Hoyas have forced 102 turnovers in four games.
Cal State Fullerton received a career-high tying 19 points from Chante Miles and 13 points from Tailer Butler, but couldn't find a way to top Loyola Marymount Tuesday night, falling to the Lions, 85-73. Despite only turning the ball over six times in the second half, a 38 percent night from the floor and a 60 percent outing from the charity stripe would due them in. Fullerton saw it's brief two-game win streak snapped, as the team fell to 2-2 on the season.
Georgetown is 0-1 all-time against the Titans with the lone meeting coming during the 1991-92 season. Georgetown fell, 89-71, on a neutral court at the Titan Gatorade Classic in San Diego California on November 30, 1991.
Cal would be the Hoyas second ranked opponent of the season after GU defeated then-No. 11/10 Delaware in the second game of the year. Sophomore Reshanda Gray scored 22 points and junior Gennifer Brandon posted her third double-double in as many games as the Golden Bears defeated Cal Poly, 87-61, on Monday. Cal is currently 3-0 on the season with wins over Lehigh and Saint Mary's. This would be the first meeting between the teams.
After shooting 5-for-17 in the first two games of the year, Lexie Nelson poured in career-high 23 points on a 7-of-12 performance from the floor to lead Eastern Washington to a 68-50 rout of Portland on Sunday. Nelson drained three 3-pointers and made 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. EWU is 1-2 on the season with losses to Pacific and Cal State Northridge. This would be the first meeting between the squads.
Tipoff against Cal State Fullerton is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. ET. Saturday's game will be at 4 p.m. ET or 6:15 p.m. ET. Live stats will be available through Cal's athletic website. Video coverage will be available for the entire duration of the tournament through Pac-12.com.
