Dec. 14, 2012

WASHINGTON - Propelled by an appearance in the NCAA Division I Championship game by its men's soccer team, the Georgetown University is ranked fourth in the country in the Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.

The Hoyas were fourth nationally with 253 points, just five points behind third place UCLA. North Carolina topped the Division I list with 292 points, with Michigan second with 265 points. Rounding out the top-five was Stanford with 251.50 points.

Georgetown was aided by a tremendous fall season, which culminated with the Hoyas men's soccer team beating Maryland in the NCAA College Cup Semifinals and playing Indiana for the national title. The second place finish in men's soccer earned GU 90 points.

The Hoyas also earned 50 points in women's soccer after the team earned a 17th place finish. Georgetown was selected for the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round.

The Blue & Gray also earned points in both men's and women's cross country. The Hoyas had a 12th place finish in women's cross country (64.5 points) and a 25th place showing on the men's side (49 points).

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 points - 10 women's and 10 men's.

The next Division I fall standings will be released on Thursday, Dec. 20.
