Lightweights Split Regatta with Princeton

April 25, 2012

The lightweight women's rowing team traveled to Princeton, NJ, this past weekend for one of the team's most anticipated duals of the regular season. "Princeton's lightweight women have a very strong tradition of performance, and are defending Eastern Sprints champions," said Varsity Coach Hank Zimmerman. "Like us, though, they are currently a team predominantly composed of freshman, and this race provided a great index for us in terms of how our younger talent is developing."

Georgetown's freshman came out in force during the junior varsity race, which saw stroke seat and novice rower Kyla McClure lead the boat to a two-second victory over Princeton. "It was critically important that some of our most talented but inexperienced athletes put it together for race day," said assistant coach Jimmy Newcombe. "We set very defined goals, in terms of our technical and strategic focus, and girls like Kyla McClure and Shannon Galvin, both very physically strong novice athletes, came through and delivered when it mattered. They were up against a Princeton boat that was all freshman, and I'm proud of how they stacked up."

The varsity, now stroked by freshman Katie McGowan, was not quite as fortunate. However, the performance did mark a defined improvement for the Hoyas from weeks past. "Katie illustrated a lot of technical prowess and maturity leading the boat, and we were able to push Princeton all the way to the line, which we were not able to do a week ago. Our sprint was effective, and the athletes maintained their composure throughout the piece," said Varsity Coach Hank Zimmerman. The Hoyas are next scheduled to face the Bucknell lightweights this Saturday in Camden, NJ.
