Panarese Falls in Georgetown Classic Championship

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team hosted the annual Georgetown Classic this past weekend at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. It was the second weekend of fall play for the Blue & Gray who had student-athletes advance to the championship in both singles and doubles.

In singles play, sophomore Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) advanced to the championship match before falling. She defeated Margarita Belyakova from Morgan State, 6-2, 6-1, before downing George Washington's Lana Robins 6-4, 6-2. In a three-set battle with Isabel Aldunate, Panarese came away with the 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory to move on to the semifinals. She defeated Longwood's Nicole Parker 6-0, 6-0 but fell in a tight championship match.

Also competing in the main draw was junior Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Philips Exeter Academy). Comolli defeated Longwood's Sarah Moomau 6-3, 6-0 and GW's Mimi Hamling 6-0, 6-0 before losing in the quarterfinals.

In the consolation bracket, junior Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) made it to the championship match. Jaeger defeated teammate Nora Montgomery (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) 6-1, 6-1 and teammate Michelle Pratt (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) 6-1, 6-1 before winning in a walkover to make it to the championship.

In doubles play, the pair of Comolli and freshman Liz Hamlin advanced to the championship match. The duo had a first-round bye and then downed a team from George Washington, 8-5. In the semifinals, the Hoyas defeated teammates Panarese and freshman Taylor Perz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) by a score of 8-3 to move to the championship.

Panarese and Perz had a good day defeating a pair from Morgan State, 8-3, in the first round and a duo from George Washington, 8-6, in the quarter finals.

Also winning in doubles play was the pair of senior Vicky Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) and Jaeger who downed a GW pair 8-3 in the opening round.

The Hoyas will be back in action in a few weeks at ITA Regionals in Blacksburg, Va.
