Georgetown Splits Doubleheader with Providence on Saturday

WASHINGTON - The Hoyas lost the first but won the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with Providence College in Providence, R.I. Georgetown (19-27, 8-7 BIG EAST) was held to one run in the 4-1 loss in game one, but held on to defeat the Friars (16-24-1, 3-10 BIG EAST) 7-5 in game two.

The victory in game two evened the Hoyas with last year's program record of 19 wins in one season with eight games still remaining on the regular season schedule.

Georgetown took the lead early in game two, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Sophia Garqicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) doubled to left field in the first inning to bring home leadoff hitter Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) after she reached base on an error. Madeleine Giaquinto scored the second run of the game, advancing home after a sacrifice fly by Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) in the second inning.

The teams each traded three runs in the fifth inning, Georgetown's coming on a three-run homerun to left field by team captain Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit), her fourth of the season.

Leading 5-4 after five inning of play, the Hoyas tacked on two more in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Giovanniello doubled to left center field to score pinch runner Taylor Koenig (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Lowe used a single to drive in Giovanniello for her fourth RBI of the game. The Hoyas have been very strong at closing out game this season, posting a 17-1 record when leading after six innings.

Sophomore Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) picked up the win in the circle, striking out five batters in five innings pitched for her seventh of the season. Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) secured the lead by throwing the final two innings for her second save of the season.

O'Leary took the starting duties in game one and pitched all six innings, allowing only four hits and three earned runs. The loss evened her record at 12-12 on the season.

Providence scored two runs in the first inning before Georgetown had a chance to get on the board in the third inning. Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) hit a solo-shot to left center field to cut the deficit to one run. The Friars responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun from right fielder Jessie Bryant to take the permanent lead.

The Hoyas and the Friars face off one more time on Sunday, April 21 at noon in Providence, R.I.
