No. 5 Hoyas Shut Out Blue Demons, 2-0

Oct. 11, 2014

Box Score WASHINGTON - The No. 5 Georgetown University men's soccer team used two second-half goals to down the DePaul University Blue Demons (4-6-2, 1-2-0 BIG EAST), 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago, Ill. The victory improved GU to 7-1-4 overall and 2-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play.

"The guys did a good job of being patient and breaking down a well-organized, committed DePaul team," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "The guys did a good job of not panicking that it was 0-0 with almost 20 minutes to go and kept their way about them waiting for the goal to materialize."

Just three minutes into the game, the Blue Demons had the first shot as senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) came up with the save. Despite Georgetown possession, DePaul had more chances midway through the half as they got shots off, but none were on target.

From that point on, the Hoyas began to be dangerous on offense with three late corner kicks. Sophomore midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) had a shot blocked before Blue Demon keeper Mack Robinson had to come up with big saves on shots from junior defender Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and sophomore forward Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School), who returned to the pitch after missing games with an injury.

Despite the late pressure, the Hoyas couldn't find the back of the net as the squads went into the break scoreless.

It was sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) who had the first shot of the second half forcing Robinson to make the save. The Hoyas dominated possession crossing ball after ball into the box just looking for an opening.

In the 70th minute, Goodman sprung free and found Rosenberry who had come forward on the right side. Rosenberry took a touch and fired with his left foot into the right corner of the net just past the diving Robinson to give the Blue & Gray the 1-0 lead. The goal was the first of Rosenberry's career on the Hilltop.

The Hoyas continued to pressure looking for a second goal and some breathing room. The goal came in the 78th minute when junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) was taken down in the box. The junior buried the ensuing penalty kick past Robinson to make it a 2-0 game.

"Keegan is such a quality, technical player and he's really capable of scoring goals so it was almost long overdue," said Wiese. "It was an important and well taken goal. He has so much quality to him it was just a matter of time."

Late in the contest, senior midfielder Austin Martz (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) had an opportunity go wide and sophomore midfielder Jon Azzinnari (Nutley, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) forced Robinson to make a save as the Hoyas didn't allow a DePaul shot in the second half. At the final whistle, GU had the 2-0 victory for its fifth-consecutive shutout.

The Hoyas outshot the Blue Demons, 11-4, and took five corner kicks while DePaul attempted none. Gomez was given the shutout victory with one save on the afternoon and Robinson took the loss posting five saves in the contest.
