Oct. 17, 2014

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Senior Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) finished with a season-high 21 kills, leading the Georgetown volleyball team to 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22) victory over Providence on Friday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena.

Johnson hit at a .450 clip for the match and was one of four Hoyas to record at least a .400 hitting percentage. Terese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) finished with 15 kills while Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) and Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) each added seven kills and .467 and .462 hitting percentages, respectively. Casey Speer (Durham, N.C./Riverside) averaged 13.67 assists per set, finishing with 41 in the match while MacKenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) led GU with 15 digs and Saar added 12.

Georgetown (8-13, 2-6 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set on two kills by Cannon, one from White and a service ace from Johnson. Providence (4-18, 0-8 BIG EAST) fought back to tie the score at eight, but the Hoyas answered with five-consecutive points, led by two kills from Johnson and one by Speer, to take a 13-8 lead. With the lead 19-15, two more kills by Johnson, sandwiched around a kill by White, extended GU's lead to 22-15. Another kill by Johnson, her ninth of the opening set, gave Georgetown the 25-17 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Kills by Cannon and Speer helped the Hoyas take a quick 3-0 lead in the second set, but the Friars scored the next four points to go ahead 4-3. Three kills from Saar sparked a 8-3 run that put Georgetown ahead 11-7, a lead that the Blue & Gray would not give up the rest of the set. White also contributed two kills in the streak and Cannon added one. Ahead by just one, 13-12, two kills from Johnson, one by Cannon and three Providence errors, helped push Georgetown's lead to 19-14. The Hoyas eventually took the set, 25-21, on a kill by Cannon.

The Friars scored seven of the first nine points in the third set to take a 7-2 lead. The Hoyas responded immediately with a 9-2 run to overcome the deficit and take an 11-9 lead. Saar led the charge with three kills and a service ace and Johnson added three kills. The two teams would go back-and-forth until, with the score tied at 21, Georgetown scored four of the final five points, including back-to-back kills by Cannon to win the set 25-22 and complete the sweep.

"I am excited about what we accomplished today and look forward to us building on it as we continue with the rest of our season," said Georgetown Head Coach Arlisa Williams. "Alex Johnson played lights out for us with 21 kills and she passed very well. Terese Cannon was good on the outside as well and MacKenzie Simpson stabilized our passing pattern. Every single pass that she passed was perfect which allowed us to do a great job of getting our hitters the ball and Casey (Speer) delivered with 41 assists in just three sets."

The Hoyas continue their homestand on Sunday at 2 p.m. against St. John's in McDonough Arena. The match will serve as Georgetown's Dig Pink match in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
