The hallmark of a truly special coach may best be defined by his reach, beyond the demands of his calling. When alumnus John Devlin took up coaching in 1972, this two-time Dad Vail champion oarsman began a labor of love, determined to secure a strong and lasting place for the sport of rowing on the Hilltop.

One of the founders and long-time treasurer of the Georgetown Rowing Alumni Association, John assumed the reins of Georgetown's first
women's crew in the fall of 1977. Aided by fellow coach Jack Nihill, John began a remarkable coaching career that included a total of five
Vail gold medals and seven trips to the national championships.

John coached both the varsity and the junior varsity boats to gold medals at the 1983 Dad Vail. Following an undefeated varsity season
and a gold medal victory at the Vail, John earned 1987 Coach of the Year honors at Georgetown. A year later, his varsity four took
the gold medal at the U.S. Collegiate Championships.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions and integral place in the annals of Georgetown crew, the name of

John P. Devlin, C'71

is permanently inscribed in the Georgetown University Athletic Hall of Fame among the names of the
greatest coaches and administrators in the history of the University.

Given this day, the second of February, in the year of 2002.
