WASHINGTON - The No. 13 Georgetown University men's soccer squad needed extra minutes to get the 1-0 victory over the No. 9 Xavier University Musketeers (10-4-2, 4-1-2 BIG EAST) Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field. Junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) scored the game winner in the 96th minute on a penalty kick to improve the Hoyas to 9-3-4 overall and 4-2-1 in BIG EAST Conference play.

"This was a gutsy performance by us today, we had to stay disciplined, focused and not get impatient on offense," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "The win puts us back in the discussion in the BIG EAST, which is where we want to be. In this league you have to find ways to get results and that's what we did today."

The Hoyas dominated possession in the first half as the Musketeers had just two quality possessions and no shots.

Georgetown had the ball for much of the half, but generated few opportunities. In the sixth minute, Allen had his first look of the contest with his shot being saved by XU keeper Eric Osswald.

Late in the half, sophomore midfielder Jon Azzinnari (Nutley, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) had a header go wide. In the final minute of play, sophomore midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) headed the ball in. The shot went high as the teams went into the break scoreless.

In the 67th minute, it was senior defender Jared Rist (Durham, N.C./Riverside) with the chance of the game to that point as Allen found him alone on the near side and Rist's shot went wide right.

Junior defender Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonnite) had a beautiful cross to the left post with Rist in position to tap it in in the 75th minute, but the players couldn't connect as the ball went long.

A dangerous free kick just outside the box gave XU a golden opportunity, but Georgetown's senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) punched it out and junior defender Cole Seiler (Anderson, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) laid out to head the reentry out of danger.

A Xavier counter gave the Musketeers a good shot that went just high. The resulting corner kick was mishandled at the back post and the rebound was knocked out by Rosenberry to keep it scoreless after some scary moments for the Blue & Gray.

Some late chances by the Hoyas didn't amount to much as the teams were tied at the end of regulation to send the contest into overtime.

Xavier had the first look in overtime as Cory Brown's low shot was saved by Gomez. The Hoyas then took possession and worked the ball down the field.

In the 96th minute, a low cross was sent into the box. A Xavier defender was there to clear it, but the defender lost his footing on the slick turf and slipped falling on the ball for a hand ball in the box resulting in a penalty kick.

Allen took the kick and connected to end the game with the 1-0 decision.

Georgetown outshot Xavier, 7-6, and both squads were awarded two corner kicks apiece. Gomez managed three saves in the net for the win, and Osswald took the loss with one save on the afternoon.

Georgetown will host its final regular season home game on Saturday as the squad welcomes the St. John's University Red Storm to Shaw Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.

Prior to kickoff, there will be a short ceremony honoring the five members of the senior class.
