WASHINGTON - The Georgetown volleyball team will play just one match this weekend, flying out to Omaha, Nebraska, for a BIG EAST Conference matchup with Creighton University on Saturday night at 7 p.m. ET. The match will serve as the first of a five-match road trip for the Hoyas.
GU (9-15, 3-8 BIG EAST) split a pair of conference contests last weekend, defeating DePaul in a thrilling, five-set match and falling to Marquette, 3-0. Terese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) (29 kills), Casey Speer (Durham, N.C./Riverside) (63 assists, five kills, three aces, three blocks) and MacKenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) (36 digs) all set career highs on Friday and Simpson was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday.
For the season, Georgetown is led offensively byCannon, who is averaging 3.13 kills per set, ranking ninth in the BIG EAST.Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) averages 2.44 kills per set and leads GU with 1.02 blocks per set. Her blocks per set average rank 10th in the BIG EAST. Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) has 24 service aces, an average of 0.28 per set, to lead the Hoyas and rank fifth in the conference. Since taking over the setting responsibilities six matches ago, Speer is averaging 10.57 assists per set.
Creighton sits at 17-7 on the season and own a two-game lead in the BIG EAST standings with a 10-1 conference record. The Bluejays have won11 of their last 12 matches and five of their seven losses have come against top-25 teams. Kelli Browning leads the offense with 3.43 kills per set while Leah McNary averages 2.64. Browning ranks third in the BIG EAST with 1.41 blocks per set and Maggie Baumert is third in the conference with 10.01 assists per set. Kate Elman leads the Creighton defense and ranks third in the BIG EAST with 4.48 digs per set.
Following Saturday's match, the Hoyas will continue their road trip with contests next weekend at Butler (Friday, November 7, 7 p.m.) and Xavier (Saturday, November 8, 4 p.m.).
