The first set was tight early, as neither team could take a lead of more than two points and found themselves tied at 13. Creighton (18-7, 11-1 BIG EAST) used a 7-2 lead to open a 20-15 lead. Creighton jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set before two kills by Williams and one each by Cannon and Johnson pulled the Hoyas into a tie at 5-5. After the Bluejays went on a 6-1 run to open an 11-6 lead, kills from White and Cannon pulled GU within three at 13-10. Creighton, however, scored the next five points to open an 18-10 advantage. Trailing 21-13, the Hoyas went on a 6-0 run of their own to close within 21-19. Williams and Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) each had kills in the streak and Johnson had a kill and a solo block. Three-consecutive kills by Johnson, White and Speer tied the score at 22, forcing a Creighton timeout. Out of the break, the Bluejays scored the next three points to win the set.
The third set was tied at five before Creighton used a 7-2 run to open a 12-7 lead. Despite four kills from Cannon the Hoyas could not mount a comeback, ultimately falling in the third set, 25-16.
"We played a solid game of volleyball against a talented Creighton team," Georgetown Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "In the first set, we passed great and were able to terminate the ball. In the second set, we served aggressively and outdug Creighton. We need to pull all of that together in one set to pull off the win. Unfortunately we fell a little short tonight.
"We are very pleased with the play of Emily Gisolfi. She stepped in at the libero position and did a fantastic job."
T he Hoyas will continue their road trip with contests next weekend at Butler (Friday, November 7, 7 p.m.) and Xavier (Saturday, November 8, 4 p.m.).
