WASHINGTON - The Georgetown volleyball team started a comeback, winning the third set against St. John's on the road, but fell short in a 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-11) loss to the Red Storm in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Friday night.
Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) finished with a team-high 16 kills while Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) and Terese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) added nine and eight kills, respectively. Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) had five kills and five blocks. Emily Gisolfi (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) led the defense with 13 digs and Casey Speer (Durham, N.C./Riverside) contributed 39 assists.
Georgetown (9-19, 3-12 BIG EAST) used a kill by Cannon and service ace from Gisolfi to pulled into a 3-3 tie early in the third set, but St. John's (19-11, 8-7 BIG EAST) scored six of the next seven points to pull ahead, 9-4. Kills by Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) and Johnson cut the deficit to 9-7, but the Red Storm again went on a run, scoring six of eight points to expand their lead to 15-9. A Johnson ace, sandwiched by two St. John's errors pulled the Hoyas within three, 15-12, but a 5-2 run by the home team put the Blue & Gray into a 20-14 hole. St. John's pulled away for the 25-17 win in the opening set.
Three blocks by White, teaming once with Saar, and two kills by Johnson and an ace by Williams fueled a 7-0 run for the Hoyas, turning a 6-4 deficit into an 11-6 lead early in the second set. St. John's fought back to tie the score at 12 and, with the score still knotted at 13, scored five-consecutive points to open an 18-13 lead. A solo block by Cannon and kill from Johnson helped cut the deficit to 18-16, but the Red Storm would not let GU get any closer, winning the set 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead.
The Hoyas trailed 19-14 in the third set before embarking on a 6-1 run to tie the score at 20. Two kills by Williams and one each from Cannon and Saar sparked the run. With things still tied at 22 a kill by Johnson and back-to-back errors by the Red Storm gave GU the set victory.
St. John's used runs of six- and five-consecutive points to run away with the fourth set, 25-11.
"We executed well in the third set, but unfortunately could not carry the momentum into the fourth," Georgetown Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "Alex Johnson led us offensively and passed the ball well and Emily Gisolfi performed well in the libero position. Dani White blocked well for us and Kieley Culbertson provided a spark off the bench."
The Hoyas will play their final road match of the season on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Providence.
