Nov. 15, 2014 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (1-0) will head out for its first road contest of the season on Sunday traveling to Richmond, Va., to take on the University of Richmond Spiders (1-0) at the Robins Center at 2 p.m. Georgetown is coming off of an 88-75 victory over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Lady Hawks on Friday at McDonough Arena.
In the season opener against UMES, junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) led all scorers with her second-career double-double notching 19 points and 10 boards. Junior forward Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) managed 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while BIG EAST Preseason Rookie of the Year Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) also had a double-double with 17 points and a team-best 14 rebounds. Junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) rounded out those in double figures with 15 points coming on five 3-pointers to tie her career high.
The Hoyas shot 40.8 percent (31-for-76) from the field and outrebounded the Lady Hawks, 53-43, while also forcing 28 turnovers on 13 steals. The bench was huge, contributing 29 points in the game.
It marked the second-consecutive season that a Georgetown rookie began the year with a double-double and the third-consecutive season that a player in the BIG EAST opened the year with a double-double.
Richmond is coming off a 75-59 win over the Providence Friars on opening night at the Robins Center. Five Spiders scored in double figures, as senior Liz Brown led with a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Richmond shot 45.6 percent from the floor and made 6-of-13 3-pointers to lead the entire contest versus Providence. In the win, junior Bria Powell had a career-high 15 points, while Genevieve Okoro (11 points) also notched double figures for her 49th double-digit scoring game of her career.
Georgetown is 9-6 all-time against the Spiders with a mark of 2-5 on the road. Last year, GU downed Richmond, 82-78, in the season opener at McDonough Arena. Five Hoyas were in double-digits in that contest. The Blue & Gray also won the last meeting in Richmond, 78-63, during the 2009-10 season.
