Nov. 20, 2014 WASHINGTON - For the first time in 26 days, the Georgetown volleyball team will finally have the opportunity to once again don its familiar home white jerseys. Following a five-match, three-weekend road trip, the Hoyas will play host to Seton Hall, on Friday at 8 p.m., and Villanova, on Sunday at 2 p.m., at McDonough Arena this weekend to close out the 2014 season.
Sunday's match will serve as GU's Senior Day. Prior to the match, the Blue & Gray will recognize the six Hoyas who are playing their final match on the Hilltop. Live stats and video for each match will be available on Georgetown's athletic website, guhoyas.com.
Georgetown (9-20, 3-13 BIG EAST) is coming off of a pair of conference losses last weekend on the road, falling to St. John's (3-1) and Providence (3-0). Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) led the Hoyas with a team-high 16 kills against the Red Storm before recording her eighth double-double of the season, with a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs, against the Friars.
For the season, Georgetown is led offensively byTerese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy), who is averaging 3.04 kills per set, ranking 10th in the BIG EAST.Johnson averages 2.36 kills per set and has 24 service aces, an average of 0.26 per set, to lead the Hoyas and rank sixth in the conference. Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) leads GU with 1.00 blocks per set. Since taking over the setting responsibilities on October 10, at Villanova, Casey Speer (Durham, N.C./Riverside) is averaging 10.10 assists per set.
Seton Hall comes into Friday's match with a 25-6 overall record and a 13-3 mark in the BIG EAST. The Pirates have already clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Championship and are battling for seeding position. Last month, the Hoyas lost to the Pirates 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 25-19) in South Orange, New Jersey. Stacey Manthorpe leads the Seton Hall offense with 3.60 kills per set, ranking fifth in the conference, and also averages 3.45 digs per set. Ashani Rubin leads all players in the BIG EAST with 1.46 blocks per set and Tessa Fournier is also tops in the conference with 5.53 digs per set.
Villanova enters the weekend at 13-18 overall and 5-10 in conference action. Earlier this season, the Wildcats defeated Georgetown, 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-13, 25-19). Laura Carpenter leads Villanova with 3.47 kills per set and is third with 2.30 digs per set. Cara Cunningham averages 1.15 blocks per set while Michelle Adams leads the defense with 3.59 digs per set.
