Nov. 22, 2014

Box Score

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (2-3) fell, 72-58, to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide (3-2) on Saturday evening in Lawrence, Kan., at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge. The Hoyas had opportunities to mount a comeback, but just couldn't get it going down the stretch.

"We showed resilience tonight, I was so proud of our fight and our focus just 24 hours later, coming back and competing in the way that we did," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "Tonight showed a team that was committed to improving and these are the steps forward that we're going to continue to make. We don't have moral victories, but knowing this is a process, as a team, as a unit and as a program, we really honed in on the things we had discussed."

Junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) led the Hoyas with 13 points, while freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added 11. For the second game in a row, sophomore guard Jade Martin (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) was a spark off of the bench with seven points and a squad-best five rebounds.

"Katie led today in a lot of areas, Jade Martin was tough defensively in things that we asked her to do," said Adair. "It didn't translate into a win, but I was proud of our effort and our focus for 40 minutes. The final part of that is just to finish and that will come."

The Blue & Gray was outrebounded, 40-32, and shot 39.0 percent from the field, while `Bama hit 44.0 percent from the floor.

The Hoyas were getting good looks and limiting the Crimson Tide early, but just couldn't get the ball to fall. Trailing 9-2, junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) slashed through the lane for a layup and a steal by McCormick turned into a 3-pointer by Adomako made it 9-7 five minutes in.

The defense continued to look solid, but the Hoyas once again went cold as the game continued allowing Alabama to build an eight-point lead, 17-9. The deficit stayed right around eight for much of the first half. Georgetown had chances, and worked to contain the Alabama offense.

An almost four-minute scoring drought for the Blue & Gray allowed `Bama to take the 32-19 lead. Sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) layed it in and both freshman guard Justyce Swango (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) as well as McCormick added late 3-pointers from deep. Despite the buckets, the Crimson Tide matched it resulting in the Hoyas going into the break trailing, 40-27.

The difference was in shooting percentage as Alabama hit an impressive 53.1 percent from the floor, while GU managed just 35.3 percent shooting from the field.

It was the defense that shined early in the second half as the Hoyas produced stops and quickly set up the break. This produced opportunities, but few points as the Blue & Gray looked good but just couldn't find a way to get a run going.

That changed around the 13-minute mark when Martin staged a 5-0 run and cut the lead to 11. This was followed by a McCormick jumper as the Hoyas held `Bama without a field goal for five minutes.

This momentum was just what the Hoyas needed, as a McCormick 3-pointer at 6:16 cut the lead to eight, 57-49, as the Blue & Gray clawed their way back into the game.

Down the stretch, it was fouls that stopped a comeback. Georgetown held Alabama without a field goal for seven minutes, but allowed 13 points at the line. The Hoyas also went cold, taking away a chance to get back in it. There were just three total field goals in the final six minutes making the final, 72-58.

Georgetown will close out the tournament on Sunday as the squad battles the host University of Kansas Jayhawks at 3 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live online on ESPN3 and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
