WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped a tough 81-58 decision to the Temple University Owls on Friday evening in Lawrence, Kan., at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge. Georgetown will have little rest as the squad continues the tournament against the University of Alabama on Saturday.
"It was tough, I felt like we were ready to compete, but I think we were a step slow all night," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "Temple was quick to the ball, getting loose balls, extra effort plays that we talked about. We did some things well, our press turned them over. Jade Martin came in and gave us toughness minutes, so the good thing is that we live to fight another day."
The Hoyas had three players in double figures as junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard) and sophomore Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) had 10 points apiece. Sophomore guard Jade Martin (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) was a spark off of the bench with seven points and a squad-best nine rebounds
The Blue & Gray was outrebounded, 51-39, and shot 33.3 percent from the field, while the Owls hit 38.4 percent from the floor.
The Owls jumped out to a 12-2 lead early in the game hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Temple made it 14-5, but back-to-back deep 3-pointers from McCormick sparked an 8-0 run to cut it to one. On the other end, the defense began to force turnovers and pull down rebounds.
As the Blue & Gray looked inside, the Owls continued to fire from long range to cling to a small lead. The Hoyas couldn't stop the hot hands of the Owls as Temple managed to go up by as much as 12 on 3-pointers as well as offensive rebounds.
Despite a late Hoya push, Temple matched it as GU went into the break trailing, 43-32. The difference was on the boards as the Hoyas were outrebounded, 29-12, in the first half and allowed the Owls 17 offensive rebounds.
Georgetown hit the boards in the second half, but it wasn't enough to stop Temple as the Owls slashed through the lane to create and continue to build the lead.
As the game went on, GU couldn't find momentum to go on a run. The Hoyas did draw fouls going an impressive 14-of-18 from the line in the second half. The free throws weren't enough, however, as Georgetown eventually fell, 81-58.
The second game of the tournament against Alabama is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, on Saturday. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
