Georgetown Loses at Kansas, 55-42

Nov. 23, 2014

Box Score

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (2-4) fell to the University of Kansas Jayhawks (4-1), 55-42, Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan., at Allen Fieldhouse in the third game of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge. The final game of the tournament is scheduled for next Sunday at Mohegan Sun against Holy Cross.

"Our scheme defensively was pretty good, I just thought that we got looks, we just didn't finish them and that's what it boiled down to," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. " We had good opportunities around the rim that we didn't put in. This tournament was a test, we had three veteran opponents, but the good thing for me is I saw positives in my team, and each day I saw us get better. We don't celebrate moral victories, but you have to celebrate growth because it's a process."

Freshman center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) led the way with her first-career double-double notching 11 points and as many rebounds. Classmate Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added 11 rebounds and six points for the Blue & Gray.

Kansas held the slight 51-49 rebounding margin and the Hoya defense forced 21 Jayhawk turnovers. The difference was in shooting as GU hit 23.3 percent (17-of-73) in the contest, while KU managed 35.2 percent from the field (19-for-54).

Georgetown began the game fired up as the defense forced turnovers and the Hoyas had open looks on the other end. The lead went back and forth. Three's from junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) made it 13-7 at the 11-minute mark as the Hoyas staged an 8-0 run.

Fouls were GU's Achille's heel as four-consecutive free throws allowed the Jayhawks to take a small lead. On the final play of the half, the Hoyas got a stop but the rebound went to KU allowing them one last chance. A 3-pointer from Asia Boyd at the buzzer made it 26-17 at the half.

The Hoyas had a hole to get out of in the second half and they had opportunities. Unfortunately, every time the team gained ground, KU had an answer.

Georgetown cut it to nine, 32-23, early in the half on a jumper from junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), but a Jayhawk 3-pointer stopped the momentum.

As the Jayhawks continued to score, the Hoyas went cold allowing KU to move ahead, by as much as 19, 48-29. However, a pair of freshmen down low went to work as Adomako along with Belk both grabbed rebounds and made layups.

Despite the play of the two frosh, fouls allowed the Jayhawks to take a significant lead getting points at the line.

Georgetown couldn't find the answer late resulting in the 55-42 final.

The Hoyas will have a break after playing four games in five days. GU will be off until Friday when the squad welcomes the University of Florida Gators to McDonough Arena for a 7 p.m., matchup. Live stats and a webcast featuring Ben Gordon-Goldstein and Ryan Sakamoto will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
