Dec. 18, 2014 WASHINGTON - Propelled by strong finishes in several fall sports, Georgetown University is ranked sixth in the country in the Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.
The Hoyas were sixth nationally with 260 points. The top five teams included Stanford (417), UCLA (366), North Carolina (336.50), Virginia (303) and Syracuse (279).
Georgetown is the highest-rated school from the BIG EAST Conference.
Georgetown was aided by a tremendous fall season, which culminated with the Hoyas men's soccer team advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The team's fifth-place finish earned 73 points.
The best finish for the Hoyas came from the women's cross country team, which placed fourth at the NCAA Championships. The Blue & Gray earned 80 points for that result. The men's cross country team placed 17th at the NCAAs, earning 57 points in the Learfield standings.
The women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year, earning 50 points.
To date, six fall NCAA championships - women's cross country, men's cross country, field hockey, women's soccer, men's soccer and water polo - have been completed. This is the fifth-straight year Georgetown has posted a top-10 finish through this point of the fall standings. The Hoyas were No. 7 in 2010, No. 5 in 2011, No. 4 in 2012 and No. 8 in 2013.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's.
The next Division I fall standings will be released Wednesday, December 24.
