Dec. 29, 2014 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (2-10, 0-0 BIG EAST) will open BIG EAST Conference play on Tuesday as the team takes on the Creighton University Bluejays (7-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) at D.J. Sokol Arena at 8:05 p.m. ET. The Hoyas are one of only two BIG EAST squads yet to play a game against a conference opponent.
Georgetown fell to the St. Bonaventure University Bonnies in the non-conference finale last Monday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas were right there, but couldn't find an answer down the stretch.
Junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) led the way with 11 points and had six steals, while junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) both managed 10 points. Junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds and scored seven points.
Georgetown outrebounded St. Bonaventure, 50-36, including 21 boards on the offensive glass. The Blue & Gray scored 19 points off of second chances as the squad was strong down low.
Adomako is leading the team in scoring with 10.9 ppg and has posted a squad-high 7.4 rpg. Vitalis is second with 9.8 ppg as well as 7.2 rpg and junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) rounds out the top three with 8.8 ppg.
Georgetown holds a slight +0.3 rebounding margin over opponents and is shooting 35.5 percent on the season.
Sophomore MC McGrory forced overtime with a 25-footer at the buzzer, and freshman Sydney Lamberty's lay-up with 8.8 seconds in overtime lifted Creighton to an 84-81 victory over Kansas last Monday night.
Marissa Janning led all players with 23 points while playing 43 minutes as all five Creighton starters scored at least 13 points. Brianna Rollerson had career-highs with 16 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots, while McGrory tied her personal-best with 14 points. Alexis Akin-Otiko recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Creighton shot 39.7 percent for the game and won the rebound battle 41-40. The Jays had 14 assists against just six turnovers, adding seven blocks and seven steals.
The Hoyas are 0-2 all-time against the Bluejays with both meetings coming a season ago in conference play. GU fell at home, 65-63 in overtime and then lost by a score of 75-61 in Omaha.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET. Live stats and a webcast will be available through the Bluejays athletic website.
