WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's track & field team opened the indoor season at the Navy Lid Lifter on Tuesday night at the Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis, Md. The Hoyas put up a multitude of top performances with both in-season runners as well as unattached competitors, especially in the middle distance events.
The Hoya women seemed right at home in the middle distance events with six runners found on the Georgetown roster topping the women's 1,000-meter run results while a trio was atop the women's mile results.
Running unattached, the trio of Piper Donaghu (Portland, Ore./Grant), Kennedy Weisner (St. Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic) and Jocelyn Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield/Northeastern) recorded the top three times in the 1,000m with marks of 2:55.52, 2:55.76 and 2:56.78, respectively. They were followed by cross country All-American Samantha Nadel (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) in fourth (3:00.23), Stefani Kurgatt (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) in fifth (3:01.35) and Kristen Walsh (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) in sixth (3:02.16).
The women's mile saw the familiar face of All-American half miler Sabrina Southerland (New York, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) cross the finish line first with a time of 4:59.21 followed by Heather Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) in second (4:59.57) and Autumn Eastman (Hinesburg, Vt./Champlain Valley Union), running unattached, in third place (5:02.66).
The GU women had success with the baton, winning both the 4x400-meter relay and the 4x800-meter relay.
The accolades were not limited to just the middle distance and relays, the Hoya sprinters saw some new faces emerge on the scene with Jody-Ann Knight (Bentonville, Ark./Bentonville), competing unattached, finishing third in the 200-meter dash, clocking 25.53 in her first race since arriving on the Hilltop. All-American Deseree King (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) was right behind in fourth place (25.90).
Newcomer Jasmine Robinson (Tampa, Fla./Wharton) and Ebony McKeever (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) finished fifth (1:19.18) and seventh (1:19.97), respectively, in the 500-meter dash.
The GU men will open the season on Saturday, December 6 at the Navy Invitational. Both teams will return to competition on January 10, 2015 with the Father Diamond Invitational, hosted by George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
